Former Public library. Dated 1905. By JH Hirst, City Architect. Paid
for by Andrew Carnegie Foundation. Half-timbered Domestic
Revival style. Brick, partly timber-framed, with rendered
nogging. Hipped plain tile roofs. Deep eaves with gutter on
wrought-iron scroll brackets. L-plan with limbs of unequal
size, and a 2-storey octagonal porch at the inside angle.
Octagonal porch has a close studded first floor and a
pyramidal roof topped with a weather vane. Above, eight
2-light leaded casements, with a panel under the front one
inscribed "Carnegie Public Library". Below, a projecting
single-storey porch with close studded gable and a pair of
half-glazed doors with side lights. Beyond, on either side, a
2-light window with brick mullion.
Main wing, to right, 3 storeys, 4 bays, has an open wooden
arcade with segment-headed bays and beneath it, a pair of
glazed doors with side and top lights with glazing bars.
Above, a box dormer with 5 glazing bar lights. Right return
has a similar arcade, 3 bays, with a pair of doors and a
similar dormer above. At the rear, three 3-light glazing bar
cross casements.
Smaller left wing has a large external brick stack at the
outer end. Close studded upper part has a single light leaded
window. Brick underbuild has a segment-headed cellar opening
and to left a small brick mullioned 2-light window.
INTERIOR has an octagonal entrance hall articulated by fluted
wooden columns, with glazed brick dado and mosaic frieze.
Leaded glazed double doors and screens and corniced issue desk
with similar screen. Main wing has fitted corniced bookshelves
and common rafter roof.
