Almshouses and adjoining boundary wall and railings. c1800 and
c1850. Yellow brick with ashlar dressings and hipped and
gabled slate roofs with 7 ridge, 2 gable and single side wall
stacks. 2 storeys; 18-window range. L-plan with rounded
corner. Main range, to right, has a central block with
projecting centre and end bays and slightly recessed flanking
wings. Recessed bays have first-floor band and outer bays have
a blank panel between floors. First-floor windows are mainly
12-pane sashes with lintels, the central window with
shouldered surround, cornice and apron. Third window from left
is a 2-light casement. Ground floor has similar fenestration
with 12-pane sashes, the central and end windows with
cornices. 2-storey wings have each a single 12-pane sash on
each floor. Rounded corner, to left, has plinth and brick
first-floor band. 4 plain sashes, those to left slightly
shorter. Below, central 4-panel door with round-arched
opening, keystone and fanlight. On either side, a 9-pane sash.
Addition, to left again, has similar details. 5 plain sashes
and below, to left, 4 similar sashes. To right, ashlar
doorcase with pilasters and cornice, and round-headed 4-panel
door with keystone. Above the door, a plaque inscribed
"College for widows and daughters of clergymen founded by Mrs
Ann Watson 1720". Outside, a brick boundary wall with ramped
ashlar coping and renewed railings with 2 gates.
