Two houses. Late C18/early C19. Flemish bond brick with stone
coping, painted stone cornice, platband and cills; hipped
plain tile roof and brick stacks to the party wall.
Double-depth plan.
3 storeys; symmetrically composed front has 3-window range to
each house. All windows are sashes under flat gauged brick
arches; 3/6 panes to the second floor, full-height 6/9 panes
with balconettes to the first floor and 6/6 panes to the
ground floor, some with crown glass. The segmental-shaped
balconettes have lead ornament to the vertical railings and a
platband at cill level. The recessed 6-panel doors to the
outer sides have raised-and-fielded panels upper panels and
beaded panels to the base; (No.9 is glazed to the top), below
an ornamental semicircular fanlight. The open pediments of the
doorcases rest on Tuscan-style pilasters, the reveals and
soffits are panelled. No.8 to left has cast-iron lion-mask
knocker, the doorcase has been restored, and window arches
painted. Doorcase of No.9 has a dentilled frieze to the
pediment and to the cornices of the pilasters.
INTERIOR: No.8 has an open-well, open-string staircase to the
rear right with stick balusters, fretted ends and wreathed
mahogany handrail. The cornice to the top of the stair well is
moulded to top and bottom with a straight chamfered centre on
which are small finely-moulded Greek urns and laurel wreaths;
moulded architraves; most doors are 6-panel, those to the
lower floors with added moulding. No.9 not inspected.
