House. Late C16, early C19 and C20. Timber-framing,
weatherboarded and brick, roofs peg-tiled and slate. Two
2-storey ranges set at right angles, timber one aligned N-S
and brick one E-W. C20 brick outshut to W of timber range and
C20 ground-floor extension of outshut to N.
EXTERIOR: W front of timber range has 4 irregular C20 wooden
casement windows and C20 boarded door. Deep catslide,
peg-tiled roof and small stack c1800 to N end. Brick block to
S - gable end with red bricks, Flemish bond, single windows on
ground and first floor, segment headed soffits, C20
replacement sash windows with simple horns, glazing bars, 4x4
panes. Low pitched slated gable. Principal early C19 stack at
junction of blocks and a minor early C19 stack on N side of
brick section. S elevation, brick, symmetrical 3 window range,
upper windows flat headed, lower segment headed. All C20
sashes of same type as on W front with 4x4 panes except ground
floor central window, a 3-light wooden casement, glazing bars,
each light 2x3 panes which replaces the original front door,
doorstep remains. Rear E elevation - brick gabled end with C20
ground-floor bay window in brick, hipped C20 machine-made
tiled roof, 4-light, wooden casements, glazing bars, each 2x3
panes. First floor, 3-light, wooden casements, each 2x4 panes.
Timber range to N weatherboarded C20, French doors with 2x4
panes in each door. Simple 4x3 light casement windows. C20
extension to N, set back, 3light casement, each light 2x3
panes.
INTERIOR shows 3 building phases. (1) N timber-framed block, 2
bays, early primary bracing and edge halved and bridled scarf
in wall plate, internal corner bracing on first floor. Ground
floor all one room with shutter groove and stud evidence of
window in S end and ceiling joists in S bay probably later
replacements with a stair trap. Joists in N bay original, some
diminished haunched soffit tenons. First floor partitioned
into 2 using heavy primary bracing, chiselled carpenters'
assembly marks, tie-beam slight camber, roof side purlin with
clasping collars, curved windbraces from each outer corner,
partitioning taken up to central collar. Shutter groove for
window in S gable end (over one below) Absence of peg holes in
W gable inplies another window position. Exterior face of S
gable end weathered, chimney-stack base, red brick, exposed on
ground floor built over site of window, probably late C17.
Phase (2) Brick unit to S central stair and hallway from S
front. Additional C19 stack at rear for rooms W of hallway.
Interior plain, and fireplaces now masked. Phase (3) C20 brick
outshut to W of timber range and re-alignment of entry to W
side. Also C20 N extension.
