(Formerly Listed as:
THORNDON PARK, West Horndon
Hatch Farmhouse and farm buildings)

GV II

Animal feeding place for Thorndon Park. 1776. Designed by
Samuel Wyatt (drawings in County Record Office). Red brick,
essentially English bond but much variation, slate and
pantiled roofs. It comprised (1) a central fodder store of
barn form, half converted in C19 to a house, (2) on 3 sides,
N, S and E, a yard, around which were single-storey colonnaded
feeding ranges with four 2-storey corner pavilions and three
2-storey central blocks with high arched openings in Roman
triumphal arch style. Subsequent adaptation of the units,
particularly in the C19 has altered various features and a few
elements have now gone.
(1) House/barn aligned N-S, originally rectangular with 2
pairs of waggon porches to E and W alternated with 3 upper
lunette openings. N and S ends had 3 similar openings and 9
long wind-eyes below, roof hipped, slated with dentilled
eaves. W front elevation, S half essentially original with
central waggon porch now with waney edged boarding in gable.
Apex level with principal roof eaves. A string course defines
base of upper barn openings. Lean-to with pantiled roof to S
of porch also C18. N half of W front - considerably altered in
C19 to convert to a house and porch replaced with taller
2-storeyed projecting block imitating style of triumphal entry
arches - with high semicircular head recess, 2 window range,
all windows sashes with glazing bars, horns, 3x4 panes, ground
floor deeper than first floor. Stack rises from principal roof
pitch on S side. To S ground floor segment head triple sash
window, glazing bars, horns, 1x4, 3x4, 1x4 panes, first floor
sash window similar to those in re-built block. Adjacent
lunette opening blocked and C19 inserted cross-wall between
house and barn directly behind, also a gabled creasing line
over blocked opening implies another projecting unit once
added here but now removed. To N of C19 block, C18 walling
remains, lunette opening has C19 3-light first floor casement
window, below, ground floor contemporary 2-light casement
window inserted. Farmhouse/barn rear, E elevation similar to
front, similar C19 treatment. S end waggon porch has C19
segment arched head with keystone, to S, lunate opening and
lean-to, to N, blocked lunette and first floor C19 sash
window. Below, ground floor slated lean-to between porch and
C19 rebuilding, originally timber-framed, (central post
visible) but now brick, rendered with 2 3-light casement
windows. C19 projecting house block (replacing earlier waggon
porch) similar to front elevation except that no arched,
recessed head, only corner pilasters. Stack rises from
principal roof on N side. N end, high lunette opening blocked,
slated lean-to below of C18 build with central doorway - C19
door with 4 bead edged flush panels. S end elevation, C18
features survive, 3 open lunettes, 9 wind-eyes below, ground
floor lean-tos on E and W sides. E with hatch door, W with
simple doorway and boarded door. N end elevation considerably
altered in C19. Outer 2 lunettes have semicircular-headed
triple window with glazing bars, 6x2 panes, centre lunette
blocked. Ground floor, C19 doorway with semicircular-headed
3-light fanlight, C19 door with upper glazing, 3x2 panes and
lower moulded panel. To E, large segment headed triple sash
window similar to one on front elevation. To W, C19 segment
headed sash window with horns. Out-shut to E has C19 sash
window with glazing bars, 3x4 panes.
(2) Outer ranges, originally similar to each other with
central archways with pedimented and dentilled gable and open
roundel in each spandrel of access arch. String course at
impost level, 2 ground floor segment headed window recesses,
blind in lower half, open above. End pavilions with pyramidal
roofs, tall blind round headed recess and string course
reflecting central archways. Segment headed opening below
string course. Colonnaded feeding stalls, 7 bays, 8 columns of
brick with Tuscan stone capitals and bases, pantiled roofs,
window shaped blind recesses within an interior wall for
mangers.
