House. C18, extended in C19 and early C20. Timber-framed,
weatherboarded, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. Main
range facing NE, with an external stack at each gable end. 2
parallel and adjacent wings to rear, early C19, with an
external stack to rear of the left wing. C19 single-storey
lean-to extension to rear of both, completing a rectangular
plan. Late C19/early C20 single-storey wing to rear right,
with axial stack.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attics. Ground floor, one C18 sash of
6+6 lights with some crown glass, and one projecting former
shop window converted in early C20, with 4 transomed lights.
First floor, 2 similar sashes, of which that at left has been
altered, and C20 replacement sash in middle. Two C18 2-light
windows with rectangular leading, each with one fixed light
and one wrought-iron casement, and one C20 metal casement, in
flat-roofed dormers. Central C20 door at front of C19/20
lean-to porch with side-lights, one limestone step, and
full-width tiled canopy on brackets, connecting with converted
shop window. Gambrel roof. The left stack is original, with
tumbled courses at the shoulders, rebuilt at the top. To rear
of it, early C19 glazed door with moulded and dentilled flat
canopy on brackets. The right stack may be original at the
base, where it is rendered, but most of it is of late C19
brickwork without tumbled courses. To rear of it, one early
C19 sash of 6+6 lights at each floor, and in the lean-to
extension one C19 casement on the ground floor and a plain
boarded door with small glass pane on the upper level. In the
lean-to roof, one C20 skylight and 2 casements in a large C20
dormer. The rear wing is of red brick in Flemish bond, with
handmade tiles on the right pitch, machine-made tiles on the
left pitch. In the left wall are many inscribed dates and
initials, some on reused bricks.
INTERIOR: the left front ground-floor room has a chamfered
axial beam with lamb's tongue stops, and an attached early C19
corner cupboard with 2 profiled shelves and 2 plain doors
below. The right ground-floor room has a similar beam with
plain stops, and some introduced oak panelling of c1600. Early
C19 stair with closed string and stick balusters, and to rear
of it, early C19 2-panel pine door with L hinges. To right of
stair, early C19 borrowed light of 4 panes with early glass.
The rear left ground-floor room has a C20 grate in an early
C19 fireplace with dentilled mantel, and C20 mantel above. To
left of it, rectangular recess with 2 profiled shelves,
moulded architrave and 2 moulded doors below. On the first
floor of main range, chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue
stops, and an early C19 cast-iron ducknest grate in each room.
The left room has an C18 moulded ceiling cornice. 2-panel pine
doors to attic rooms.
