II
Gasholder. 1878-9, by J Hepworth, engineer. Cast- and
wrought-iron and concrete. Cylindrical rising vertical tank
set in concrete pit, has had its iron-plate cladding removed
leaving exposed iron ribs (done before listing). Guiding frame
is of 3 tiers of 12 plain round cast-iron columns with ball
and spear finials, held together by lattice girders and
bracing. Previous listing regarded this as first use of
concrete in north of England.
