Shop and office. Early C16, mid C16, C19 rear addition and
refronting with shop. Timber-framed and plastered, peg-tiled
roof. 2 storey with partial rear attic, one prominent stack.
Modified H plan of central range, jettied cross-wings, long
rear lean-to extension to N wing and similar to S wing with
further deep lean-to addition on N side into rear yard.
Front, W elevation: on sloping site, dropping to S with C20
brick plinth at N end. Centre range, large C20 single paned
window to N, to S, early C20 projecting shop window in early
C19 style with glazing bars, 5x4 panes, also single return
side lights. S cross-wing terminal jetty joists remain
exposed. Doorway and projecting early Cl9 shallow bow window
with restrained moulding, glazing bars, 7x4 panes, wooden
barred cellar grille below. C20 door with upper glazing,
glazing bars, 2x3 panes, 3 recessed lower panels. First floor,
C20 3-light casement window with glazing bars, 6x4 panes,
behind, large early C19 stack seen on roof apex in red and
yellow brick with remains of triglyph frieze. N cross-wing,
soffits of jetty joists exposed with joint evidence for 4
original brackets. Ground floor, C20 3-light casement window
with leaded panes, recessed C20 doorway with over-light and
C20 door with lower fielded panel and full upper glazing.
First floor, C20 triple sash window in early C19 style.
Rear, E elevation considerably obscured but central range has
short lateral stack at N end and gabled dormer window to S. N
wing, rear addition, timber-framed, plain with slated, single
pitch roof to Church Street. S cross-wing, early and
additional rear addition clear, with C19 lower brickwork and
gable end stack. Stack seen from Market Hill prominent. Large
C19 slated lean-to on N side, timber-framed with C20 timber
extension across full width of yard. Upper entry doorway
towards E end appears to be contrived from earlier slated
dormer window. N end elevation to Church Street: all windows
C20, principal block, ground floor, plain sash, first floor,
single-light casement. Rear single storey addition with slated
roof, 2 single-light casement windows.
INTERIOR: partially inspected. N cross-wing, of 2 bays, has
simple, robust, 2-way braced crown-post roof and chalk cut
cellar. S cross-wing of 2 bays, separate build from central
(hall) unit. Remains of crown-post roof similar to N
cross-wing but cut by major stack. Second phase extends back
also with crown-post roof elements. Tie-beams with crown-posts
cut away long ago through whole range. Small terminal addition
of C19 brick and timber construction. Central range roof
appears to be re-built in simple side-purlin form.
