Corinthian temple. 1790. By RWF Brettingham, to celebrate
George III's first recovery fron insanity. Brick, clunch and
terracotta. Small, approx 10.5 x 5.6m, aligned N-S, no
pediments or roof, peripeteral and tetrastyle but no inner
naos, to be seen as a ruin against the sky-line. Columns on
similar N and S fronts have wide central gap and corner
clustering. The low brick podium is stone floored and carries
smooth clunch columns with oolitic limestone moulded bases and
terracotta capitals. Entablature has acanthus decorated
modillion cornice with dentils, enriched fluted frieze with
Coade stone panels by Rossi on S and N fronts depicting gods
and well-being. E and W faces of frieze carry metal lettered
inscription, now fragmentary, recording erection by Sir John
Griffin Griffin, who was, by then, Lord Howard de Walden. A
circular ha-ha surrounds the structure.
