House, in remote position, approx 1.7km N of Little Walden
Church (not included). Early/mid C16 with C19 additiions.
Timber framing exposed and plastered, peg and pantiled roofs.
L shaped plan. 2 storeys. Front S elevation: long jettied
range, exposed framing with tension braces, central stack,
half hipped roof, doorway in central chimney bay, single bay
each side. 4 principal joists, 3 still with brackets, common
joists under bressumer plate. Doorway original, step-stop
chamfered jambs, doorhead C20 renewed, also boarded door.
Windows C20 casements with glazing bars, 2 on each storey,
2-lights, 4x3 panes, also, central first floor shoulder-headed
fixed light. Stack C17 or earlier of 2 conjoined blocks. Rear
N elevation: all rendered with smaller C19 parallel block
towards W end. 4 C20 casement windows all in rear block, 3 on
ground floor, one on first floor, glazing bars, 4x3 panes. C19
stack in rear unit, central and rising from roof eaves. W end
elevation: flush gable ends, rendered. Jetty profile to S.
Windows casements with glazing bars, ground floor one 3-light
6x3 panes, also fully glazed door with side light 5x4 panes in
all, first floor, one 3-light window 6x3 panes, two 2-lights
4x3 panes. E end elevation: as W end, reversed. C19 block set
back. Windows casements with glazing bars, 3 of 2 lights 4x3
panes on first floor, single bowed ground floor window in
principal (S) block 4 lights 8x3 panes.
INTERIOR: not inspected but seen to agree with frontage.
Ground floor has pair of timber lintelled back-to-back
fireplaces. Common joists flat laid, step-stop chamfers to
principals. The building appears to be a very early example of
a 2-celled lobby entrance house with the house framed round
the central stack as is common in the C17. Technical details
imply an early C16 dating, an impression strengthened by the
tapering of the soffit of the principal jetty joists, a local
fashion seen in similar buildings of the early /mid C16 in
Saffron Walden eg. Nos 2 & 4 Church Path (qv).
