Aynsley China Works (northern range)

Large pottery works complex, part of Aynsley China. Built in
several phases during the second half of the C19. Brick with
tiled roofs. 3-storeyed, long range to SE with advanced
entrance blocks, one with blocked archway and Palladian style
windows over, the principal entrance to the right with archway
flanked by arched windows, and Palladian style windows over,
linked by continuous hood mould to flanking windows. Linking
sections of 3, 5 and 7 bays with round-arched windows with
continous sill band forming hood moulds. Adjoining to the NW,
the former Sydney works of 1879. Ornate range employing
mixture of gothic and classical styles. 3-storeyed,
symmetrical with 8 bays each side of the projecting entrance
block which has pedimented gable flanked by full-height
pilasters and capped by fleche, and ornamented with terracotta
bands and panelling, inscribed "Sydney Works, 1879". Arched
entrance now blocked, but the archway itself, with ornate
keystone and vermiculated voussoirs, survives. Windows in
flanking ranges have blue brick heads with stuccoed keystones
and decorated stone sills.
