Terrace of villas. 1832. Eight fine semi-detached linked
villas plus no. 8A, a single bay extension between nos. 8 & 9,
and no. 11 an irregular extension to left of no. 10; on south
side of square planned in 1828 and laid out in 1832 by John
Booth, and his son, also John, Surveyors for the Lloyd Baker
Estate; William Joseph Booth, another son, architect; nos. 8A,
9, 10 and 11 altered. Brown and gold stock brick set in
Flemish bond with stucco dressings, and stucco pediment over
each pair; artificial slate gabled and mansard roofs, others
obscured by parapet; brick centre stacks. Restrained Greek
Revival style. Side-hall entrance plan to outer linked bay of
each house except nos. 8A and 11. Two-storeys with basement; 2
windows each (except no. 3 of 3 windows & nos. 8A & 11 1
window wide) including recessed 1-window entrance bay coupled
as links. Low steps rise to deeply recessed stucco entrance
(no. 3 irregular and with 2-storey extension) with antae
supporting entablatures except nos. 8A (original door brought
forward in-line with antae and with additional flanking
wood-panelled pilasters and horizontal panel above overlight;
original architrave survives behind although overlight and
transom removed), 9 and 10 (only slightly recessed and without
antae), and 11 (altered and irregular carriageway width
recessed flagged forecourt flanked by coupled stucco pilasters
carrying altered entablature with entrance to left approached
on ground level). Architraved doorway except no. 3 (flanking
fluted pilasters) with corniced-head and rectangular overlight
(some decorative) with original 3-panelled doors and
projecting animal head to centre panel except nos. 10 (C20
door) and 11 (pair of panelled and glazed doors C19).
Architraved sashes throughout: ground-floor with predominantly
1/1 and 6/6 sashes (no. 3 4/4; nos. 9 & 10 3/3 with margin
lights; no. 11 8/8); 1st floor 1/1, 2/2, and 3/3 sashes; 1st
floor recessed balconied links with narrower doors or sashes.
Wide stucco storey band between ground and 1st floors (nos. 9,
10 & 11 altered). Plain stucco band beneath pediments; stucco
parapet with stucco coping or blocking course to 1st floor
recessed link. Attached cast-iron railings with urn finials.
