Terraced houses now incorporating a restaurant at no. 55
Clerkenwell Close, a pub at no 43 and a shop at no 44. Early
C19 with pub frontage of c.1900. Yellow brick set in Flemish
bond, stucco, roofs obscured by parapet. Two-window range to
no 55 Clerkenwell Close, no 43 has a three-window range in
Clerkenwell Close and two-window range in Clerkenwell Green,
two-window range to no 44. Ground floor of no 55 Clerkenwell
Close stuccoed with banded rustication; flat-arched entrance
with cornice, C20 shallow bracketed bay window, and vestigial
cornice. The pub front to no 43 has a tiled base, and
pilasters supporting fascia and cornice; the framing to
windows and doors appears to survive, and some original
engraved glass, now set behind plate glass windows. No 44 has
late C20 shopfront. The upper windows flat-arched with moulded
stucco architraves, those to the first floor with segmental
pediments on consoles; cornice and blocking course.
The interior of The Crown Tavern includes a late C19 bar back
and bar counter surviving apparently in moderately large part;
there is a back room with late C19 panelled dado, and a
fireplace possibly of that date; staircase to upper room with
turned balusters.
