Terraced house. The residence of John Wesley 1779-1791 (LCC
plaque between ground floor windows), and now the Wesley
Museum. 1779, with extensive reconstruction in the 1890s, when
the building became a museum. Yellow brick set in Flemish bond
with dressings of stucco, stone and Coade stone, and roof of
slate. Four storeys over basement, three-window range.
Flat-arched entrance to left with stone architrave and
cornice; the doorcase has a fluted frieze and overlight with
fan-shaped decorative glazing; panelled doors of original
design. All windows flat-arched with 6/6 sashes of original
design to all but third floor. Frieze of Vitruvian scrolls in
Coade stone forming a storey band above the ground floor;
parapet. Four-window range to the left-hand return, all blank.
Area railings with pinched spike finials.
INTERIOR: : entrance hall with panelled dado and cornice;
staircase with panelled dado, plain newel posts, stick
balusters and exposed string. The front and back rooms on the
ground, first and second floors all have original architraves
to doors, panelled dadoes, panelled window shutters, cornices,
and wooden fireplaces of modest Classical design; in addition
there are fitted cupboards flanking the fireplace in the back
rooms and the second-floor front room, and fine cast-iron
grates in the first- and second-floor front rooms and the
second-floor back room; more elaborate cornice in first-floor
front room; closet for private prayer on the first floor, with
panelled dado, cornice, fitted cupboard and fireplace with
cast-iron grate of Classical design.
