Hotel. C18 with later alterations. Stuccoed brick; tile roof
with stucco stacks. Double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; 6-window range with 2-storey, 3-window
wing projecting to left. Gabled forward breaks, one to left
end, one to left of right end windows; top cornice. Central
entrance has canopy over paired 3-panel doors; later entrance
to left of right end window and carriage entry to left end
with paired gates with spiked cresting. Ground floor has 2
canted bay windows with colonnettes, 4:16:4-pane sashes and
flat canopies, similar bay has 12:24:12-pane sashes, low
window to left of entrance has 3:9:3-pane tripartite sash,
right end later small-paned bow window; 1st floor has 2
windows with 4:12:4-pane tripartite sashes flanking oriel with
8:12:8-pane sashes and flat canopy on bracketed panelled base,
forward breaks and right end have 16-pane sashes; 2nd floor
has 3 windows with 3:9:3-pane tripartite sashes, forward
breaks have windows with 4/8-pane sashes and right end window
has 8-paned horned sash.
Wing to left has brick modillioned cornice, early C20
shopfronts with carriage entrance to left, 1st floor has C20
small-paned top-hung casements. Rear has varied gabled wings.
INTERIOR has exposed timber-framing, some probably original
but some inserted in late C20; winding stair and closed well
stair.
