2/18 The Vale Farmhouse
- II
House. C14/C15 core with C16 and later alterations and additions. Timber-framed
and plastered. Red plain tiled roofs. Off centre right and external left red brick
chimneystacks. 2 storeys. Forward right is a C19 single storey range of red brick
with red pantile roof. Rear left a lower range, C16 one storey and attics, much
altered and extended forward C19 and C20. Main range, 3 first floor small paned
vertically sliding sashes. Ground floor 3 small paned French windows. C20 door
to rear range. Internally the late C16 wing was originally arch braces to tie
beams, the roof now of C18 and later construction. The main range left bays have
heavy close-set wall studs and flat section ceiling beams. Carpenters marks to
ceiling, jowled storey posts. The right bay, which appears to have extended further
at one time, is of earlier origin and retains an arched braced tie beam, one brace
now cut away, which supports the stem of a chamfered, square section crown post.
Later decorations obscure the rest of the frame. There is a back to back inglenook
fireplace with mantel beams over. Two C18 corner cupboards by the chimney.
