Description

TL 66 SE MOULTON BROOKSIDE

5/59 The Priory

II

House. Formerly rectory; 1846, with fragmentary mediaeval core,
and C16 wing to rear. 2 storeys, irregular plan. Gault brick
with string at 1st floor. Hipped slated roof with axial chimneys
of gault brick. Windows with flat arches of gault brick and
small-pane sashes. Panelled entrance door on the north side with
moulded cornice on console brackets. The rear wing is timber-
framed and rendered, with some roll and ogee moulded 1st floor
members visible; re-roofed and altered 1846. The C19 work is on
the site of a wing built of masonry, in which was found the fine
C15 laver or piscina now reset in the C19 walling of the entrance
hall. From this it was then assumed that the building had been a
chapel. Some of the walling is said to be incorporated in the
present building. For description of the building prior to 1846,
see "Notes about Moulton", Newmarket Journal, 6.8.1904 (Suffolk
Records Office).
