Pair of bridges. C18 and probably c1775 by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown for
the Sandbeck estate of the Earl of Scarbrough. Irregular magnesian limestone
blacks, 1 bridge with ashlar voussoirs. 2 single-span bridges flanking a
small island in stream to west of Abbey House (q.v.). Western bridge has C18
round arch beneath crudely-set rubble walling; upstream side of bridge
collapsed. South side of eastern bridge of c1775 has irregular blacks set in
Grotto-style with pendant keystone; dressed wallstone arch soffit flares out
upstream. Remnants of the scheme for Roche Abbey carried out by Brown
between 1774 and 1777; the contract survives at Sandbeck Park and states that
he is "to finish all the Valley of Roach Abbey in all its parts, according to
the Ideas fixed on with Lord Scarbrough (with Poet's feeling and with
Painter's Eye)".
