3/43 Medieval tomb
set in lych gate to
Church of
Saint Bartholomew
GV II
Altar tomb. C14, resited c1863. Magnesian limestone inlaid with brass.
Rectangular with hollow plinth moulding, inscribed side panels and moulded
lid inlaid with brass cross having an ogee-arch beneath a stepped Calvary
base. Inscribed panel on east side reads 'mors janua vitae' (death, the
gateway to life). Unique of its kind in South Yorkshire. Its present
location has allowed vandalism including removal of part of the brass cross.
