Including Nos. 26-31 (consec) Eldon Street which form the rear of No.
16 Finsbury Circus.
Designed 1915, completed c1920-21 after the war. By Gordon and Gunton
for S. Pearson & Co. Stone clad steel frame; ground floor and Ist
floor and projecting outer bays chanelled. Slate mansard roof with
dormers and cast iron cresting. Monumental classical style following
the curve of the crescent. 6 storeys, attic and basement. 11 bays.
Outer bays have concave corners and 3 grouped 2-pane sashes to each
floor, slightly bowed through 2nd to 4th floors and terminate with
Diocletian attic windows. Main bays have round arched windows to
ground floor and a Doric portico to each penultimate bay. From 1st to
5th floor paired 2-pane sashes to each bay articulated by engaged
Ionic columns with balustrade to 2nd floor and supporting a frieze and
5th floor with bays articulated by carved cartouches and heavy
modilion cornice with balustrade to attic. Attached cast iron
railings to basement area. Rear facade stone clad in simplified
classical style. 16 windows; 4 to right paired in slightly projecting
end bays with hooded balconies to 2nd floor.
