8/42 The Engine and The Hermitage

2 dwellings. C17, C18, restored C20. Squared coursed limestone with Collyweston
slate roof. Originally probably each of 2-unit plans, together forming an
L-shape range. Single storey with attics. Together comprising a window range.
2 canted bay windows with C20 casements, to left and right of centre, have
Collyweston slate roofs. C20 single-light casements, under wood lintels, to left
and right of each bay window. C19 and C20 casements under flood lintels to far
left and right. One C19 casement under eaves, to left, and 4 gabled eaves
dormers to attic. The 3 dormers to The Engine are C20. C20 door to centre of
range, has C19 wooden porch. C20 door and porch to left. Ashlar gable parapet to
right. Stone and ashlar stacks at ridge. Bay to far right is probably a C18
addition. C19 lean-to extensions to rear. Elevation to left of The Hermitage
partially reconstructed C20. Interior of The Engine has ovolo moulded spine beam
and open fireplace with similar moulded bressumer in centre room. Room to left
also has open fireplace with bressumer and timber stud wall. Interior of The
Hermitage has remains of an entry giving access to the rear, at the junction
between the 2 properties. Part used for a time as The Engine Public House.
