Description

SE 2807 CAWTHORNE CHURCH ROAD
(East end)

10/19 Cross adjacent to steps
at western approach to
Church of All Saints.

GV II

Cross. Possibly C11. C19 base. Gritstone. The cross is in 4 parts, the
main part of the shaft being part of a reconstruction. The parts are thought
to be from different crosses. The head has arms of 'hammer-head' type. The
main (west) face appears to have its main motif cut back. The reverse face
is plainer. The upper section of the shaft is quite small and tapers
asymmetrically upwards. The lower section of the shaft shows, on its west
face, what may be the lower part of a figure or two opposed figures, and 'D'
motifs. Octagonal base.

P.F. Ryder. Saxon Churches in South Yorkshire (South Yorkshire County
Archaeology Services). 1982.
