9/13 Former coach house to
Cannon Hall.

Former coach house. Probably 1760s for John Spencer Stanhope of Cannon Hall.
Possibly by John Carr (architect of Hall q.v.). Red brick with ashlar
dressings, coursed stone to rear. Stone slate roof. Forms west side of a
courtyard. Two storeys, ground floor back to earth. Symmetrical 9-bay
facade (into courtyard), the centre 3 bays breaking forward slightly and
pedimented with oculus in tympanum (formerly a clock). An ashlar band
between the floors forms the impost to 5 large carriage openings (the centre
3 bays and each end bay), that to left part blocked and that to right forming
a through passage. Each has its tympanum part blocked with a 12-pane
segmental-arched fixed light. Similar lights to remaining upper-floor bays.
(bays 1,2,3, now have 6-pane sashes). Later garage doors to 3 centre bays.
Doorway to bays 3 and 7. 12-pane ground floor sashes to bays 1 and 2 and a
later replacement to bay 8. Hipped roof.
Rear: five 2-light double-chamfered windows (probably later C19), each light
of 10 panes.
