Gatehouse and walling to entrance court of Baynards Park. Circa 1840, built by
the Rev. Thomas Thurlow possibly employing Charles Rickman or Benjamin Ferrey.
Brown and grey/blue brick, with some diapering on the first floor, stone angle
quoins and dressings and Horsham slab roof. Gateway to south west angle of
entrance courtyard with wall extending north to angle turret and returning east
to further entrance. Wall to north and east approx 8 feet high, offset with
moulded brick stringcourse half-way up and battlemented along the top. Taller
octagonal turret to angle of wall on stone dressed squinch. Main gatehouse two
storeys high with offset end ridge stacks. Stringcourse to top of plinth and
over ground floor, octagonal stone 'drums' to ends of roof kneelers. Battlemented
oriel window on moulded corbel support to first floor left of centre with two
arched lights on front face and single arched lights on sides with diamond-pane
leaded casements. Armorial crest below centre light. Two arched-light leaded
first floor window to right. Three arched-light ground floor window to right under
label moulding. 4-centred arched carriageway to ground floor left. Lower
projecting range to left with curved angle on squinch support. Two square
quatrefoil windows near eaves. Door to left behind courtyard wall. Rear:- turret
with stone chequerwork decoration and oriel window on first floor. Two 3-light
windows below. Doors to side rooms in gatehouse passage with C19 locks and fittings.
