5/160 The Old Fire Station

GV II

Former Fire Station, now public conveniences. 1872. Red-brown brick with yellow
brick dressings, glass and hipped slate roofs. On corner site at junction of
Ward Street and North Street with tower on angle. Single storey either side of
two stage tower. Tower under hipped pyramidal roof and weathervane, copper clock
dial on upper stage on each face. Further hipped roof below clock on deep
bracketed eaves and with angle quoins to first floor below. Floral round window
on North Street elevation over rendered cornice, ground floor blocked up. Glass
canopy projects to right of tower with shaped screen wall above. Left hand return
front facing Ward Street:- Cambered-headed openings for fire engines now blocked-
in,except for that to right where doors give access to conveniences. Fixed case-
ments to left, glass roofs above.
