House, now 3 shops and one flat. Probably late C18 with earlier origins, C19 and
C20 additions and alterations. Painted brick in Flemish bond; plain tile roof Ll-
shaped plan with wings projecting forwards, the centre infilled late C19. 2
storeys, 4-bays. Road front: 3 shop fronts that to 2 left bays (no 41) late C20,
that to bay 3 (no 43) late C19, altered, having one panelled pilaster remaining
and corniced fascia flanked by console brackets with dies and pediments; that to
right bay (no 45) early C20, altered, having pilasters, small-paned half-glazed
door, fascia and cornice. 1st floor: right-hand bay has tripartite sash in
reveal with 12-pane sash flanked by 4-pane sashes, left-hand bay a mid C20 3-light
window, both these end bays having stepped dentilled eaves under hipped roofs.
Centre bays are taller, with tripartite sashes, parapet with dentils and coping,
and rising behind truss a square-plan clerestorey with continuous small-pane
glazing and hipped Welsh slate roof. Rear: ground-floor outshuts, old brick stack
rising from central one; 3 sashes with glazing bars to 1st floor and a smaller,
blind one; stepped dentilled eaves; roof hipped with old brick ridge stack at
end. Returns: truncated external stacks; stepped dentilled eaves; right return
has 2 segmental arched 2-light windows on 1st floor. Interior: rear range at
centre (no 43A) has hoists with hollow-moulded chamfers and lambs tongue stops; a
fireplace on each floor, the architraves having fluted pilasters and friezes with
roundels at ends; wide stair rising from back to front with acanthus-leaf ceiling
cornice.
