Classical late C17 mansion with earlier core, at the end of long avenue.
Ashlar; 2 storeys; 4 + 3 + 4 facade; large plate windows; centre, altered
in C19, has round headed windows and raised parapet, possibly a portico
having been removed; slate roof; attractive pedimented porch surmoumted
by rampant lions. Incorporates an earlier Queen Anne house; side elevation
of rough stonework; 2 hipped gables with heavy modillioned eaves; mullioned
and transomed lattice casements. Originally the seat of the Acton family
of whom the 1st Lord Acton (1854-1902) the historian and naturalist, who
also lived here, was one of the most distinguished.
