Origins obscure and does not have any apparent connection with crosses set up
by Edward I in memory of Queen Eleanor. At first a wooden structure, replaced
in 1890 by the present stuccoed brick octagonal tower of 3 stages with short spire
above. Plain plinth, other stages have cusped panelling in Gothic style. Crockets
up the ridges of the spire.
The descriptive notes should be amended to read:
Circa 1600 brick structure replacing an earlier wooden cross. Covered with stucco
in 1809 and subsequently given Gothic decoration of the same material. Octagonal
tower of three stages with short spire. Plain plinth. Other stages have cusped
panelling. Tower ridges crocketed.
