Barn and attached engine house approximately 30 yards north of Preston Vale Farmhouse

Barn and engine house. Late C18 barn with mid-C19 engine house and
later alterations. Red brick; slate and plain tile roofs. Aligned
east-west with barn to the west and engine house to the east. Barn to
the left, engine house to the right. Barn: Formerly one storey, now
one and two storeys with dentilled eaves; 5 bays, inserted C20 casements
to the central and right hand bays and small mid-C19 latticed casement
to first floor right; blocked threshing floor doors to left of centre
and right of centre with segmental heads, the former has an inserted
cart entry, the latter an inserted doorway, both with segmental heads,
roughly central inserted doorway with segmental head; bays to left,
right and centre each have 5 tiers of air vents. Engine house: Left
hand bay of one storey and gable-lit loft, right hand bay of one storey;
the left hand bay is obscured by a later attached cowhouse except for a
segmental-headed door to the left; the right hand bay has a door to the
left and a window to the right with latticed panes, both have segmental
heads, square factory-type chimney stack to the rear. Included as an
example illustrating the adaption of an C18 barn for the use of steam
