front of St Mary's Convent

GV II

Ruin with grotto. Early C19, incorporating medieval material,
restored early-mid C20. Flint pebble facing, brick and stone
dressings, composite stone for grotto. Plan: square roofless
tower with length of wall to north, returned east to the
Convent of St Mary (qv) with small grotto in north-west
corner. Two stage crenellated tower with 2 lancet windows on
south face. Wall abutting to north about 2m high, doorway
opening restored with mid C20 brickwork, 2 featureless window
openings adjoining. Grotto about 3m square with stalictites; a
minor example of the art. Coursed flint faced wall with coping
and round arched opening about 2m high, returned to Convent of
St Mary (qv). The "ruin" incorporates material from the former
manor house of Portslade (qv) to west.
