Description

CRAWLEY BRIGHTON ROAD
TQ 23 NE
Lowfield Heath
3/80a
Crown-post barn to
east of Rowley Farm
House
GV II
Barn. Late mediaeval. Timber framed with weatherboarded cladding and plain tile
roof, with hip to west. Five bays. Centre entries, with later window inserted
above doorway in the long yard elevation, which has outshut to west of entry and
later lean-to to east. Two windows in east gable. In rear elevation, two late
C19 or early C20 windows in second bay from west, one each in third, fourth and
fifth bays from west. Internally, barn retains jowl posts, tie beam braces and a
crown-post roof with square section posts with upward braces of rectangular section;
the roof also has side purlins, perhaps inserted when the tile roof was added,
possibly replacing thatch. The wall framing and studding is partly concealed by
modern boarding; the western-most bay is floored over.
