7/55 Hurst Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. C16 and C19. Rendered rubble, asbestos-cement slated roofs, some
exposed sandstone rubble at basement level. The lofty one-wing gabled remnant
of an early farmhouse, with large external eaves stack extending northwards
beyond its outer wall and linking with later L-plan large-scale extension with
hipped roofs, all in characteristic early C19 form and detail. The early wing,
to left on approach from main road, is 3 storeys with various casements, and
C20 glazed door at first floor, left, up 9 steps on quadrant arch over heavy
plank door below to basement. The C19 addition is 2 storeys, 1+2-windowed,
with 4-light over 5-light casements to segmental heads in forward wing, and
2-light casements with glazing bars and segmental heads over one 16-pane sash,
not aligned with window above, and C20 plank door with 4-pane transom light,
left.
Interior: 3-bay cruck roof in old wing, and heavy timber-framed wall at upper
level at junction with newer work, wall up to 850mm thick. At lowest level
a stone-flag floored cheese room. Main stair is C19 stick baluster type.
One or more bressummer fireplaces thought to be concealed by later works.
