- II*
Dwelling, formerly farmhouse. Probably C16, possibly earlier. Main body
in blue lias rubble, but wing, left, partly timber framed and partly sand-
stone rubble, right gable return, rendered, all very steep pitched Welsh
slate roofs. Compact, lofty main block with gables to west (road), north,
east, and south, plus 2-storey porch, left, and lower wing beyond, left.
Porch to lobby opposite heavy stone stack in left gable, staircase, left,
in lower wing. Road front three storeys plus tiny opening in upper part of
gable, one-windowed. Ground floor 3-light, first and second floors 2-light
mullioned casements; heavy plank door in double ovolo wood frame to porch,
heavy strap hinges and some original lock fittings. Interior: large fire-
places with deep bressummers in main body opposite entrance, and in wing,
left, beside newel stone stair in semi-circular plan, upper flight in wood
to 150 mm newel post. Very complex roof structure in four-gabled part, pur-
lins propped by curved queen posts. Several broad plank lodged doors. Lower
wing much heavy timber framing. Back of main fire opening in lower wing has
a flue 'bypass' system with 5 small openings in fire-back running up to re-
join flue half way. An unusually significant structure of first importance
in this area.
