4/25 The Coombs

II

Former private house, now old people's home. Circa 1859 for
Trotter family of Coleford. Dressed and snecked rubble stone with
ashlar dressings, hipped slate roof, C20 brick stacks. Classical
with French style central tower. Single range. 5 windows
including corner bay at right. Various sash window heads, all
with keystones, moulded stone architraves and fluted sill brackets.
Bracketed stone eaves, sill band at first floor level, vertical
bands at corners and marking some window bays. Projecting
pedimented Tuscan porch on plinth with interior dentil cornice. 3
steps up to double doors with round-headed fanlight and flanking
slit windows. Tower above porch has circular window at attic
level with architrave broken by flat bands at compass points, and
swept hipped roof with steep gabled dormers with circular lights on
each face, and railed flat roof.
Interior: hall has cantilevered stone staircase with wrought iron
balustrade and swept wooden handrail. Coat of arms of Trotter
family on wall. Main ground floor room to right has fine
plasterwork and original white marble fireplace.
