Congregational, now United Reformed Church. 1906-7. By
J. Lomax Simpson, for Lord Leverhulme. Stone with stone
slate roof. Nave, transepts, crossing tower, chancel, south
vestry. Romanesque style. 5-bay nave, sill course flat
buttresses and corbel table. Windows of 3 round-headed
lights with colonnettes and tympana, eastern windows of 2
lights with decorated tympana. Western gabled porches with
round-headed entrances of 3 orders, doors with elaborate
iron strap hinges. West end has 3-light window, tympanum
with interlacing. Transepts have angle buttresses, paired
round-headed lights and flanking 3-bay blind arcading, round
window with zig-zag moulding above. Tower angle buttresses
with nook shafts, bell stage has sill course, 3-bay blind
arcade with central 2-light louvred openings, clasping
buttresses, corbelled parapet and recessed pyramidal roof.
Octagonal turret to south east has blind arcading and
pyramidal roof. Chancel has round apse, 5 windows,
buttresses with nook shafts, window to north and south.
Vestry has parapet, 5 windows between paired shafts; lateral
stack and entrance. North porch to chancel has gabled east
end with entrance, organ loft has 6-bay blind arcade with 2
windows, drip mould with bosses, gable with small window.
Interior: Waggon roof with tie beams. Crossing arches on
paired responds, interlace arcading to chancel. Much
carving, biblical scenes to capitals. Screen to west end of
nave, pulpit and choir stalls, round font are richly
decorated.
