Astley Castle

Bridge and remains of gatehouse and curtain walls. C14, with origins c.1266 and
early C19 alterations. Regular coursed and coursed squared sandstone. Bridge has
round arch, and early C19 embattled parapet. Gateway has 4-centred arch,
possibly C14, of 2 chamfered orders with shield panel above. Double-leaf plank
doors. Return walls approximately 2 metres long to bridge; left wall has
bricked-up chamfered arch. Curtain wall to the right and in front of the house
is little more than a retaining wall. Curtain wall to the left rises to a height
of approximately 8 metres for a length of approximately 15 metres to the rear of
the house, and is attached to the rear right corner. 2 buttresses. Early C19
two-light mullioned window. On the left the wall curves back towards the house
and ends at a round-arched gateway. Lower and much rougher wall to left drops
down to retaining wall only. Licence to crenellate was obtained in 1266.
