5/77 Moor Hatches

GV II

Drowning sluices for West Amesbury water meadows. C18 or early
C19. Limestone. Six channels divided by stone piers approximately
2m long x 30cm chamfered on upriver end. Stone piers with grooves
to take 6 no. timber hatches, horizontally boarded through central
timber with perforated plate on rear face, and roller guide on
front. Header baulk has iron wishbone ratchet, and notch for
crowbar, for each hatch. Timber plank footway. Meadow to west has
a fairly complete system of branching header channels and
herringbone spreader leets, controlled by timber sluices, all
forming a group.
