Public house, C16 and C17 in about 5 phases. One storey and attics. 2 storey
crosswing. Hall range to left, cross-wing at centre, an addition to right.
Timber-framed and plastered. Plaintiled roofs: two gabled C19 dormers with
small-pane casements. Two axial C17 chimneys of red brick, both with rebuilt
upper shafts. Late C19 or early C20 small-pane casements. 3 early C20 half-
glazed panelled entrance doors with cornices. A complex building with much
alteration before c.1700. The cross-wing is earliest: the front 2 bays have
good close studding and unchamfered floor joists laid flat (mainly concealed),
all late C16 work. Behind, a room has tension-braced studding and mullioned
window evidence, of mid C16 or earlier. A further, lower range to rear of
about 2 bays, late C16 or early C17. The hall was rebuilt during C17 with
butt-purlin roof, but reusing a good mid C16 1st floor structure with a
massive binding beam and floor joists of large section: an open fireplace with
deep cambered lintel. The right hand range was added in C17/C18.
