Description

METFIELD SKINNER' S LANE
TM 28 SE
9/100
Nos.1 & 2, Doctors Lodge
-
GV II

House, now divided into 2. A complex structure in 3 main parts: C15 to west,
with considerable later alteration (No.1); attached to the east a late
C16/early C17 parlour range (part No.1, part No.2), with a C19 addition to the
north (No.2). The older ranges are timber framed and plastered with pantiled
roofs except for 2 slopes which are plaintiled. 2 storeys with attics to the
older ranges. Various casement windows: No.1 has mainly C19 windows, No.2 mid
C20 large-paned windows. The C19 addition has a 4-panel door (the upper 2
panels glazed) and gabled timber trellis porch. Each range has an internal
stack. The 2-cell west range contains part of a former open hall house, with
the cambered tie beam of the open truss (the bracing removed) and a moulded
and crenellated beam against the inserted stack (probably a dais beam); there
is exposed studding at first floor level. The original roof has been lost.
The adjacent parlour range has been somewhat altered; there are ovolo-moulded
cross-beamed ceilings to each floor.
