House. C15, part rebuilt and altered in C16, stack inserted mid C17, reroofed
and part cased in C19. Timber frame, roughcast with some colourwashed brick
casing. Pantiled roofs. Originally a Wealden house with both wings rebuilt
and hall floored during C16. A half H on plan, 2 bay hall, 2 bay solar cross
wing to left projecting slightly and 3 bay broader service wing to right
projecting further forward. 2 storeys and attics. Screens passage entrance
with a panelled architraved door, a large C17 casement window to left, 12
panes with a large central mullion. First floor 2 and 3-light casements with
early leaded panes. Post to central truss is shafted with capital to a curved
brace to projecting tie beam over wall plate. C19 eaves overhang. Large
axial ridge stack at upper end of hall, rebuilt sawtooth shaft. Solar wing,
originally jettied and underbuilt in C17, has C19 casements, wavy bargeboards
to steep gable. Inner return of service wing is jettied with a curved brace
to dragon beam, jetty to front underbuilt with C19 brick facing, segmental
headed casements, bargeboarded gable. Axial ridge stack between centre and
rear bays of service wing, rebuilt sawtooth shaft. Right return C19 lean-to
outshut. Roof retains original hipped form to rear. Continuous rear
elevation has a break in plinth between hall and solar wing, scattered
casements and blocked screens passage doorway. Interior: hall has original
moulded semi-octagonal corbels for arched braces on posts of central truss,
inserted floor has complex hollow and roll moulded crossed binding beams with
roll moulded joists. Solar wing has moulded shafts to curved braces to
formerly jettied front. Service wing has stop chamfered dragon beam. Stair
behind stack altered in C18 with splat balusters on landing, 4 centred brick
arch to first floor fireplace. Large cambered tie beam to central hall truss
retains mortices for large arched braces and off centre crown post. Some C17
panelling, shutter grooves and early doors.
