Farmhouse, now house. Built 1629 for Oliver Smith and Henry Bosworth: remodelled
and left end truncated in late C18. Coursed and dressed limestone up to moulded
string course; roughcast over timber frame above; left gable wall of late C18
limestone rubble. Gabled C20 tile roof; rendered ridge stick, and late C18 brick
end stack to left. 3-unit lobby-entry plan. 2 storeys; 3-window range. Rendered
surround to late C19 six-panelled (4 glazed) door right of centre, flanked by
early C19 canted bay windows with 8-pane sashes: rendered flat arch over late
C18 three-light round-headed leaded casement to left. Similar 4-light
first-floor casements. Rear: ashlar dressings to C17 canted wood-mullioned bay
window with C19 casements, which is flanked by early C17 round-arched lights
(one with 2-light wood-mullioned ovolo-moulded window): ground floor has early
C17 three-light stone-mullioned ovolo-moulded round-arched window flanked by
similar one-light windows which include one mutilated by C19 door. Rendered
stair-turret with 3-light leaded casement projects from roof. Rear right wing of
similar materials: similar C17 one-, 2- and 3-light windows, and 4-light
wood-mullioned window: rear gable has early C19 two-storey canted bay window in
place of C17 stone bay window. c19 extension to rear left. Interior: stack
divides over entry. Moulded stone fireplaces, all differently carved with sunk
spandrels. Large stone double-chamfered fireplace and corbel (possibly reset)
inscribed 1629/OSHB in room to left. Timber-framed stair-well to rear and
timber-framed first-floor partitions. Rear wing rooms have plaster ceilings:
moulded cornices to quartered beams, the soffits of which are pargetted with
trailing pomegranites on ground floor and strapwork on first floor. Roof mainly
rebuilt in late C18, but retains collar truss at front and queen-post truss with
cambered collar to rear. Subsidiary features: short 2m. long wall to right
connected to early C17 gatepiers, each of limestone ashlar with moulded
entablature and ball finial: entry infilled in late C18 by smaller keyed
archway. Oliver Smith and Henry Bosworth had this house built to accommodate
Smith's son and Bosworth's daughter who were married in 1629.
