Obelisk. c.1735. By William Kent for General James Tyrrell. Limestone ashlar.
Square tapering shaft on a pedestal with moulded base and cornice; around the
base of the shaft is a band carved with a wave motif and on the top is a spiked
metal ball. The obelisk lies on the main axis of the house and forms a focal
point in the important early C18 formal layout of the garden. The design of the
obelisk may be an adaptation of Kent's proposal.
