Substantial house. Late C16, altered early C17. Pebbledashed and rendered timber
framing on flint and brick plinth; old plain-tile roof with pebbledashed stacks.
3-unit plan, extended. 2 storeys plus attics. 3-window pebbledashed front has
projecting gabled outer bays, that to left with a weatherboarded gable, and each
with a small C19 plank door near its outer angle, adjacent to a window. All
windows are casements except for a 6-pane wide sash in the right bay. A stack of
3 shafts rises to right of centre, and a massive early-C17 chimney, bearing many
shafts, projects from the left gable wall and is partly contained within an
extension (now No.56 q.v.). Right end wall and rear have small irregular windows
and there is a rear gable, to left, and 2 small brick extensions. Interior:
massive internal stack with 2 Tudor-arched moulded-stone fireplaces and a
first-floor fireplace with a brick Tudor arch; early C17 rectangular stone
fireplace with ovolo mouldings; C17 oak panelling with fluted pilasters; one
flight of C16 oak solid-tread stair leading to attics; oak roof structure with
butt and clasped purlins; evidence of herringbone brick infill to right gable.
