GV II*
House. Late C17, altered late C19. Finely jointed handmade brick, plain
tiled roof and shaped gable-end parapets with kneelers. Two storeys and
attic; three-course band at first floor level; two-course band at attic
floor level and moulded timber eaves cornice. Seven bays. Most of the
windows are original and have gauged flat heads and long narrow single-
light leaded casements. The windows of the outer bays of the first floor
are blind. The windows of the outer two bays of the ground floor have been
replaced by tripartite sash windows with cambered heads and central 8-pane
sashes. The central entrance has its original moulded hooded timber canopy
on shaped brackets, a four-panelled door with a moulded architrave and a tran-
som light. Attic lights at gable ends. Interior: the house is one room deep
with a central hall containing the original staircase which has moulded hand-
rails, turned balusters and some original square newel posts. A small locked
recess in the top step is said to have been used to conceal money. The parlour
to the south has an C18 overmantel (not in situ) and adjacent cupboard of semi-
circular plan. The house is said to have been built by Thomas Cornwall as a
dower-house for his wife Ann. (VCH, IV, p 363; BoE, p 279).
