2/47 Hills Farmhouse

GV II

Farmhouse. Probably late C16 with C18 extension and later alterations.
Sandstone rubble, Welsh slate roof and rubble stacks with brick shafts.
L-plan with cross-wing returning southwards from east end of main range.
Cellar with two storeys. North elevation of two windows, is dominated
by large central front stack containing a loop light; to the left of the
stack are three ground floor casements each of two lights, the left one
possibly late C17 and restored, a cross-casement similar to the last to
the staircase at mezzanine level and a 3-light mid-C19 metal casement to
the first floor; to the right of the stack is a full-height extension,
probably C18, for a granary, possibly formerly with cider house beneath,
which has a 2-light opening alongside a ledged door at the top of tallet
stairs with a dog kennel beneath. Interior: the ground floor room south-
east of the large front side stack has richly moulded ceiling beams,
probably late C16, with diagonal chamfer-stops and subsidiary joists,
dividing the ceiling into panels and an inset wall-post (inserted in C20)
to support one beam alongside the north wall; the square south ground floor
room of the cross-wing has similar mouldings but is loftier and its ceiling
divided into nine regular panels; the granary roof which is divided into
two bays contains a central truss with two posts from tie-beam to collar.
The first floor loop light in the north side stack may have served a now
inaccessible garderobe.
