Belvedere. Dated 1792, By John Foss of Richmond for T.J. Anderson of Swinithwaite
Hall. Sandstone ashlar, lead roof. Octagonal in plan, 2 storeys. Ground floor: plain
plinth; above, vermiculated rustication with round-headed panels of plain ashlar, mostly
forming blind openings, but with door of 6-flush panels on east side, and sash window
with glazing bars on north side, below which is carbed the date. Above, a parapet with
balustraded panels except over door, where there is a sculpture of a talbot. First
floor set back behind walkway: plain ashlar, with round-headed panels, containing door
on east side, windows on other 3 alternate sides, intermediate sides being blind.
Modillion cornice, blocking course. Shallow dome. Interior: ground-floor room with
cast-iron range, boiler, and deep window seats. Domed ceiling of stone. Closet between
inner and outer walls, also stone staircase leading up to parapet walkway, giving
external access only to upper room, which has a cast-iron fireplace and good Neo-
classical plasterwork.
