TOTTON AND ELING ELING CAUSEWAY

5/11 Tide Mill (formerly listed
as Eling Tide Mill)
29.3.59 & 11.4.75 II*

Tide Mill. Mid C18 on site of mill dating from c1420, altered C19 and C20,
worked until 1948, restored 1978-83. Brick, old plain tile roofs,
internally timber-frame. Situated on seaward side of dam/causeway across
mouth of Bartley Water. In 2 parts, one with one storey below causeway, 2
storey and attic above, 6 bay, other set-back from causeway, 2 storey and
one below causeway, 4 bay. Front onto causeway has lower part to RH with
outshot to bay against other part. On ground floor segmental head arches
to irregular plank doors and 2-light casements. Over 2 and 3-light
casements of different sizes and door with external staircase to RH part.
LH part has arch running under centre, and causeway with sluice gear.
Inside lower RH part complete working waterwheel and millstones. Wheel
survives in other part.
