House, formerly the rectory. Early C16, but by William Soude
(1528-1544, Rector), incorporating part of original C14 or early
C15 building redesigned with additions by Robert Masters
(1756-1797, Rector) and in C19 by Thomas Cooke Burroughs
(1778-1821). Plastered timber frame, C14 or early C15
plastered, moulded brick, C16, C18 and C19 brick. Slate roofs.
Two storeys. Early C16 hall range with two wings to north and
south planned as a rectoral farmhouse with clergy accommodation
and retaining one and a half bays of a medieval vaulted cellar
and two service doors in cross passage. South wing altered in
C18 and two storey staircase hall inserted between wings; early
C19 semi circular bay window extended later to two storeys.
Main facade of seven 'bays' cased in gault brick with steeply
pitched hipped slate roof, two rear stacks (and C16
cross-stepped side stack to hall at rear). Recessed two storey
brick panels flank centre three 'bays'. Seven first floor and
six ground floor recessed, twelve-paned hung sash windows in
cambered brick arches. C19 stone portico with round headed arch
and key block, tall double pilasters and deep cornice.
Interior. Very fine C16 double-ogee-moulded cross beams to hall
ceiling. Partition to cross passage with some C17 panelling
inserted by Masters may cover original screen. Two service
doors with deeply moulded two centred arches and embattled
squared headed outer orders enriched with fleurons.
Quadrapartite rib vaulting to cellar with carved rose bosses and
coat of arms of Bishop of L'Isle, truncated to east and
projecting beyond building line to north. Fine C18 closed
string staircase, panelling and doors.
