Description

NZ 70 NW GLAISDALE BROWN RIGG HOWE
744094

7/82 Stump Cross

II

Cross base and stump of shaft. Probably medieval, reordered.
Gritstone. Square plinth supports battered square socket stone.
Fragment of shaft in socket is too narrow for hole, and looks like
upper part of cross. 2 prone pieces of shaft, flanking and partly
under the base, may be the lower parts of a tall cross. No visible
inscriptions. OSBM on east face. The cross marks a junction
between the old road west from Whitby and another running north to
Roxby.
