8/62 Yew Tree House
II
House. Cl7 or possibly earlier, altered mid-C18 and late C20. Timber-framed
with rendered infill on rubble base with slate roof and rubble stack at west
end with rebuilt brick shift. Two framed bays aligned east/west with large
rubble chimney at west end. Originally single storey and attic; roof raised
in C18 to form two full storeys. Framing: three panels from sill to wall-
plate with additional row of panels at eaves level where roof has been raised.
Collar and tie-beam truss with struts and V-strut above collar at east end.
King-post truss with raking struts across lower angles at west end. Windows
are all C20 casements. North front elevation: there is a 2-light window and
a single-light window on the ground floor and three 2-light windows and a single-
light window on the first floor. Entrance in west bay has a C20 gabled porch
with a multi-paned window at its north end and the doorway in its west side.
There are C20 lean-to outshuts at both ends. Interior has stop-chamfered main
ceiling beams and a large stone fireplace with chamfered jambs and a bread oven.
The lack of weathering of the timber at the west end of the building suggests
an additional bay(s) may have been demolished when the building was altered in
the C18; this may imply it was once a longhouse. (RCHM, Herefs, III, p 210,
item 19).
